Found: Man missing from Grays Hill landing, truck and trailer found there Posted on October 17, 2017 by S Y WoodsOctober 18, 2017 On Monday, October 16, around A 10:30 p.m., 72-year-old Matthew Fields of Grays Hill was found unharmed in his boat by search and rescue units approximately one mile from the Clarendon Road boat landing. Mr. Fields reported that he had run out of gas. The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the United States Coast Guard, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Burton Fire District, Beaufort Marine Rescue and Parris Island Marine Rescue for their involvement in the search for Mr. Fields, who was reported missing by his family earlier this evening. Original Story: At approximately 10:45 a.m. Monday morning, October 16, 72-year-old Matthew Fields was last seen by family members leaving his Moultrie Circle, Grays Hill residence in his pickup truck with his trailer and boa Mr. Fields told family members that he was going out on his boat and planned to embark from the Grays Hill boat landing located on Clarendon Road. Several hours went by and after not hearing from Mr. Fields, family members drove to the Grays Hill boat landing to look for him in the early evening. When they arrived at the boat landing, they found his pickup truck and empty boat trailer in the parking lot, but Mr. Fields and his boat were nowhere to be found. Being concerned for his safety, family members called Sheriff’s Office Emergency Dispatch and reported Mr. Fields missing and endangered. Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the boat landing and began searching for Mr. Fields. The United States Coast Guard, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Burton Fire District, Beaufort Marine Rescue and Parris Island Marine Rescue were contacted and have since joined in the search for Mr. Fields. Mr. Fields is described as an African American man, 5’11”, 220 pounds, wearing blue jeans and a gray t-shirt. Mr. Fields is presumed to be in his 14’10” green in color aluminum Creek Craft boat. Anyone coming into contact with Matthew Fields is urged to contact Sheriff’s Office Emergency Dispatch 9-1-1 immediately. We appreciate your attention in this very serious matter.
