Thursday morning, April 6, at approximately 8:00 a.m., Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a deceased person submerged in a pond in Burton Wells Park in Burton. After confirming there was in fact a body in the pond, Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and Coroner’s Office were notified, responded and recovered the body from the pond.
The deceased person has been identified by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office as 22-year-old Javonte Colleton of Burton. Javonte was reported missing by family members Wednesday night at around 11:00 p.m. They reported Javonte took a bus Wednesday afternoon to go to Burton Wells Park and had not returned to his Shanklin Road home as expected at 5:00 p.m.
A search of the Burton Wells Park area was conducted throughout the night and at approximately 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning his body was discovered in the pond. A forensic autopsy is being scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina. Circumstances surrounding Javonte’s disappearance and death remain under investigation.
Forensic pathologists from the Medical University of South Carolina released preliminary findings of Javonte Colleton’s autopsy to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office Friday afternoon. Pathologists indicated there were no signs of trauma found during autopsy. Medical/toxicology studies are being performed to aid in their determination of the cause and manner of Javonte’s death.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Javonte’s death.
