At approximately 2:30 p.m., Sunday afternoon, June 11, a teenage boy was reported missing in the waters off the beach on Fripp Island.
The missing juvenile was in the water with other swimmers and was reportedly caught in an undertow. All other swimmers were accounted for and safe. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search with the United States Coast Guard, SC Department of Natural Resources, Beaufort Marine Rescue and Fripp Island Security.
Around 8:00 p.m. Sunday night, the multi-agency search for the missing teenage swimmer, identified as 16-year-old Franklin “Eric” Clark, was suspended for the night and resumed Monday morning.
Early Monday afternoon, divers recovered Clark’s deceased body from the waters off of Fripp Island. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office has scheduled a forensic autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina to confirm the cause of Eric’s death, which based on witness accounts appears to have been an accidental drowning.
